Why I don’t have “success metrics”
I don’t have success metrics, despite running a marketing business for 10 years. 🤦🏼♀️
That makes it difficult to apply for a job because job descriptions often require someone with “demonstrated” experience.
I have that! I just don’t have the numbers.
Why? Because I set my business up in a way that worked for me and my clients at the time, but not in a way that gives me these numbers now that I’m looking to join a team.
Instead of running long-term projects that would demonstrate growth for my clients, I set them up with a strategy, initial branding concepts, and copywriting tips. And I taught them how to do it themselves so they felt empowered to go ahead without me.
At that point, it was up to them to execute consistently but I was no longer involved so I can’t show that we grew their business exponentially.
What I can show is expertise, videos of websites I built (before clients changed them 🫣), and problem-solving skills.
Oh, and these opportunities I secured for a sustainability SAAS startup last year:
✍️ wrote an article that got the founders invited to speak at an industry event
🖥 designed and built a new website in less than 3 weeks
🤝 grew our LinkedIn following 30% per month
🎨 designed professional, exciting, and branded pitch decks so the team could focus on content and not design
🕵️♀️ implemented SEO that attracted clients (who also read every word of the website because the copy hit home for them so deeply)
⛰ secured all 4 WebSummit activations I applied for, including a video that was played on the Future Societies screen and a speaking opportunity
📲 redesigned the UX look and feel of the software platform
🎤 successfully applied to speak at industry events
🏅 placed in the top 20 for an innovation award
But no, I’ve never 10x-ed someone’s newsletter list unless you count going from 1 (me) to 10. That feels dishonest and I’d rather tell you the truth.
I don’t have the numbers, but I do have what it takes to help you get visibility.
Would you take a chance on someone with 10 years experience, passion, curiosity, and drive, but without numbers to plug into their CV?
