The DIY CMO: What I would do from Day 1

If I were your CMO, here’s what I would start with.

Warning: I’m going to ask a ton of questions because strategy begins with understanding.

🎨 Brand review to make sure we’re all on the same page when it comes to the voice of your brand

+ fonts, colors
+ imagery
+ mission, vision
+ voice
+ your customer

📊 Customer experience audit to plug holes and stop churn

+ how do they contact you
+ does it work - your lead magnet signup, your booking calendar, your contact form
+ who on the team receives emails from the website contact form
+ how do they buy - is it easy
+ what if they have trouble
+ what is the onboarding process
+ who conducts sales calls

🌟 Then I want to discover capacity within the team

+ who is active on LinkedIn
+ who is a good writer
+ who is a good speaker
+ can we get people on a podcast
+ what artwork, designers, writers do we have access to

⚡️ Now we leverage advantages

+ what do customers love about your product/offer
+ who are your advocates
+ do you have partnerships
+ where can we create strategic partnerships

🚧 We also have to acknowledge challenges

- what do customers not like about your product/offer
- why do people say no
- no partnerships

🪺 Now I want to know your marketing history and potential

+ what has been working in terms of marketing?
+ where do you get customers?
+ what have you tried that didn’t work? (and how long did you try it?)
+ are you open to podcast interviews, speaking opportunities, hosting a webinar?
+ what are you not interested in doing? Like it’s a big NO from everyone.
+ how do you feel about current marketing?
+ the website?
+ social media?
+ do you have an email list?

💥 Time to take action with the answers.

☝️ First, I’ll create a brand guide for the team.

✌️ Then, I want a quick win, so we’ll leverage resources to create a partnership or secure a client.

🪢 Meanwhile, we are improving the product, updating the website to reflect insights gained through this process, creating a content calendar for consistent outreach, designing branded pitch decks to boost sales enablement, and looking for opportunities to increase visibility.

🙇‍♀️ If this feels overwhelming, it is.

That’s why it helps to have an outside consultant 🙋🏼‍♀️ step in and facilitate. We live for this AND we see things that you might miss, which means we make connections you didn’t know are possible.
