A classic case of "do as I say, not as I do."
I've been caught in a classic case of "do as I say, not as I do."I’ve been out of commission for a couple weeks. Of course, I’ve been working, but not feeling creative, and therefore not posting much on social media OR sending my regular newsletter (gasp!).It’s a real problem, since my business (and yours) depends on consistent content.Through this experience, I have reinforced my desire to batch my newsletters and blogs. I talk about batching newsletters, but this past month has definitely shown me that I don't have this whole "batching" thing under control. Now I need to take my own advice and really batch my content, in case the need to hibernate strikes again.
What is batching?
Batching means you create all those newsletters, blogs, or videos at once and then you’ve got a stockpile of content to release. It makes everything so easy. You just sit down and create several weeks of content all at once.I’ve been good at batching in the past. I actually had a batch of 5 emails! It felt so liberating. But then I ran out of my batch. And now, for the past few weeks, as I’m out of commission, I don’t feel like writing, but I’ve made this commitment to my business. This has left me feeling stuck writing when I don’t feel like it.Apparently, I like learning things the hard way. Somehow, it’s not enough to listen to ALL the experts who say to batch your content. (My buddy Denise Duffield-Thomas batches all her videos for the year. She made them all in a week!) Not me. I had to learn it the hard way.Now I’m issuing a challenge to myself (and you!) to write 3 emails this week. Then, write 1 email every week to add to your batch. This way, you’ll always have 2 extra emails to use in case of emergency. If you burn through your batch, you just do it again… write 3 emails for your batch and write 1 per week. When we batch our content, we feel responsible, professional, and liberated. There’s no pressure to produce when you don’t feel like it, and you can easily create more valuable content when you’re not stressed out.I hope you’ll take his lesson to heart and batch your newsletters and social media.Let’s make a promise to each other, right now, to have 2 more newsletters than we need. We’re going to write 3 newsletters this week. One for this week, and two for backup. Then we’ll just write one newsletter per week and we’ll always have 2 extras. You in?Plan 2 hours to do my free training* and then write 3 emails. Each email can take about 40 minutes to write. Then, you’re done! You’ve got your backstock of content and you’re free to write your next newsletter any time next week.
